This article is interesting but mentions nothing of the reasoning behind such actions, not surprisingly. When British expatriates purchase property in poorer countries, they greatly increase the value of not only their property but surrounding properties. This, in turn, increases the taxes of their non-British neighbors - often to the point that locals are financially forced out of entire neighborhoods. This has bred unimaginable resentment towards British expatriates in much of southern and southeast Europe. There are sometimes protests in the former Yugoslavia when a British expatriate purchases a home in some coastal Croatian town or some mountainous Bosnian resort.
I said years ago that the British expatriates must be more aware of these. One of these days someone is going to walk into an expatriate neighborhood in southern or southeast Europe and open fire and the international media, which is completely ignoring the story for the most part, will have endless days of coverage trying to figure out why.
