ATLANTA --What to do when the rain won't come? If you're Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, you pray.
The governor will host a prayer service next week to ask for relief from the drought gripping the Southeast.
"The only solution is rain, and the only place we get that is from a higher power," Perdue spokesman Bert Brantley said on Wednesday.
Perdue's office has sent out invitations to leaders from several faiths for the service, set for Tuesday.
Perdue has several times mentioned the need for prayer -- along with water conservation -- as the state's drought crisis has worsened. Over the summer, he participated in day of prayer for agriculture at a gathering of the Georgia Farm Bureau in Macon, Ga.
Perdue, a Baptist, has enjoyed strong support from Georgia's Christian conservatives.
The Southeast has been suffering from an intense drought in recent months that has threatened supplies of drinking water. Georgia has been locked in a battle with Alabama and Florida over how much water should be sent downstream from the state's dwindling reservoirs.
Governors from the three states reached a temporary agreement after meeting with Bush administration officials in Washington.
The prayer service will be held outside the state Capitol on Tuesday. Unless, of course, it rains.
"Then we'll move it inside, thankfully," Brantley said.Smile and nod... separation of church and state, who needs it?!

If this was happening in another part of the United States, they'd go on and on and on about how it's God's wrath against whatever it is they don't agree with.

You mean you don't think God is punishing them for racism and homophobia and discrimination?

Well they are high up. And magical. Who knows how clouds work? I won't accept any of that science witchcraft...

It couldn't possibly be because the Earth just goes through drought.... could it? :p

F***in A! Science may not ALWAYS be correct, but in this case, I think that scientists could lay the smackdown on these morons. Begging an imaginary friend for favors isn't helping anyone! They'd rather not try something constructive though, would they?

Well, it's not like there's much they can do. It rains when it rains.

From an atheist's perspective, this powerlessness is the reason people invented gods in the first place.

When you've failed to plan properly or do anything practical address a pressing need, you can always fix it by doing something completely useless.

But you can bet there are a lot of people in Georgia thanking God they have such a godly governor, who responds properly to a crisis by taking the problem to Jesus. That's one of the things that's wrong with the South.

Well this Georgia boy is about ready to riot.

Prayer indeed. To probably misquote Alexander Hamilton from the Continental Congress, "We do not need the help of foreign aid.".

Maybe since the Christians lumped all of their problems on that poor guy who has to deal with all of this crap alone, their god is a little stressed? Things could be running as well as our government up there.

I can hear it now:

God: Minion, where is all of Georgia's rain I asked for?
Minion: Uhm sir, there was a mess up in shipping.
God: What mess up?
Minion: Somehow it was all shipped to Louisiana a few years ago.
God: Crap, tell them I'm not in and will return their calls later.

Too bad this wasn't planned by a clergy-figure. Like Maesi said, 'separation of Church and State, who needs it?'. Just kidding.....Our government should be more of this separation and start declining practices that would involved them in such.

It's alright if private citizens or citizens of other organizations participate, plan or call for, but it is not alright for a governmental state to declare a 'day of prayer'. One, this is against Church and State and two, it is discrimination for everyone who doesn't believe in that particular deity or even a deity at all.

Hmmm...

I wonder if it'd work. I did hope the wind would change today and it did about 10 minutes later.

I think their chances might be better if they wait till a cloudy day! :p
